About

Hi there and welcome to Woods and Goods, an art and craft blog about woodworking, painting, and more! We are Zak and Ann, a spoon carver and fine artist navigating life as freelance creatives.

Zak began carving spoons in 2017 as a relaxing way to wind down after work. Since that time his relaxing hobby has taken on a life of its own and he now has a broad knowledge of carving techniques, wood joinery, and different ways to finish wood.
For ten years Zak worked for an artisan tile company in which the process from cutting specific shapes out of clay, to glazing, to firing is done by hand. This experience gave him practical, first hand knowledge of the amount of work that goes into making a quality product by hand.
He has since taken that handmade experience into his new career as a trim carpenter, adding the beautiful final touches that make houses feel and function like homes. His goal is to make quality, functional objects, often choosing to salvage discarded wood, and create pieces that can be passed down rather than thrown away.

Ann has loved creating for as long as she can remember. From drawing and painting to sewing and embroidery she is passionate about the the positive impact the creative process has on individuals and communities. Shortly after receiving her BA in painting, Ann set to work selling her art in local shows and soon discovered she had an interest in teaching others about art. Today she continues to sell her artwork as well as teach at various art centers in the grater Minneapolis/ St. Paul area. She is excited to reach a broader audience of creatives with this blog.
